Picking a poster size before checking what frames are actually available is the single most common avoidable mistake — here's how to pick a size you won't regret.

The standard sizes, and where they fit

• A4 (21×29.7cm / 8.3×11.7in) — desk, shelf, or a small gallery-wall grid alongside other frames.
• A3 (29.7×42cm / 11.7×16.5in) — a step up from A4, still suits a shelf or a modest wall spot.
• 8×10in — the most common off-the-shelf frame size in the US; easiest to buy a frame for on short notice.
• 12×16in — a genuine wall statement piece without needing a custom frame order.
• 18×24in — the largest common size, reads as a real focal point; check your wall space before committing.

Metric or imperial — check your region first
